Let’s Talk Web Development

Maybe it’s your first time entering this space and you're getting an earful of technical terms and buzzwords from web developers that sound somewhat foreign to you. Not to worry because one, we are all friendly here so you should never be afraid to ask for clarification. And two, here is your cheat sheet for a few commonly used terms in web design and web development.

• Above the fold

The area of your website that is immediately visible to your audience without scrolling. (‘Above the fold’ is in reference to the content that appeared on the top half of the front page of a newspaper.)

• Back End

Refers to the work happening behind the scenes of how a user interacts with a website. Back end web development refers to server-side development.

• Call To Action (CTA)

Prompting the user to do something.

• Content Management System (CMS)

The software application that allows users to manage the content of a website without having to code.

• Hero Image

The large banner image at the top of your website landing page.

• Favicon

A small icon that represents your website and is displayed in the address bar, in links bar, bookmarking area and browsing tabs.

• Front End

Refers to what the user sees and how they interact with a website. Front end web development refers to client-side development.

• Responsive Web Design

Design approach that considers all devices -- desktop, phone, tablet, etc. -- ensuring that web pages will adapt accordingly (i.e. look good and function properly).

• Slider

A slide show or carousel of content on a web page.

• Wireframe

Skeletal layout of a web page that provides the framework of its structure and functionality.
