Choosing the Right Fonts
When it comes to designing your business logo or your website, it’s important to choose the right fonts. Just like colours, fonts also have emotional associations. Whether or not you decide to work with a digital creative agency, you’ll want to consider various factors such as the type of emotion you want to convey and your target audience, for example.
Here are some common categories of fonts to get you started:
Serif
In typography, a serif is a small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol within a particular font or family of fonts (as defined on Wikipedia). Times New Roman and Garamond are two examples of commonly used serif fonts. Fonts with serifs are the oldest font type and therefore tend to have a classic feel to them. They are often associated with being traditional or sophisticated.
Sans Serif
Sans serif fonts are the opposite – they are fonts without serifs. Examples of sans serif fonts are Arial, Helvetica and Calibri. They offer a “cleaner” look and gained popularity with minimalism and modern aesthetic. Sans serif font types are also easier to read in a sense and are therefore popular when it comes to web content.
Script
Script fonts are those that are meant to look handwritten or in cursive writing style. Examples include Brush Script and Lucida Calligraphy. They have an elegant and sophisticated feel and are often used by beauty brands and elegant restaurants, for example. Although you wouldn’t want to use script font types for the body text of your website, you could use it for headings and titles. If you decide to work with a digital creative agency, it’s not a bad idea to ask for guidance on font trends and combinations, as using standard fonts or pairing the wrong styles could make your website look amateur.
Decorative
Decorative fonts are the most eye-catching and vary in style, from very playful aesthetics to minimalist and modern types. Cooper Black and Goudy Stout are examples of decorative fonts. Like script fonts, they are best used for logos, titles and headers, and not for body text. Decorative fonts are great for grabbing the user’s (reader’s) attention, but would make content harder to read if used for the main body.
