Website Design: Marketing to Millennials
Millennials, also known as Generation Y (or Gen Y), are the demographic born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s. As they make up a large segment of the current consumer market, it can be helpful to understand things such as consumer behaviour, general interests, etc. in order to have a well-aligned marketing strategy in place—including a website that appeals to this specific audience. So let’s talk website design for marketing to Millennials.
Mobile is a Must
If you haven’t already, incorporating responsive, or furthermore, mobile-first website design is imperative. Your website needs to look and function just as well on mobile as it does on desktop. Users should be able to easily browse through your website on their mobile phone while eating their avocado toast in the morning. If your website design falls short of being optimal on mobile, you run the risk of users not returning and therefore potentially losing customers.
Don’t Use Stock Photography
Millennials appreciate authenticity and can spot stock photography. Use authentic story-telling with real people if possible. One way to convey authenticity is to use custom photography and videos with real people, stories and testimonials, etc. that are true and real to your brand.
Avoid Big Blocks of Text
Consider using imagery and other graphical elements to break up text in your website design. This demographic tends to be on-the-go and so lengthy blocks of text are not ideal. Use headings and keep things concise if possible to make your website “skimmable”. Better yet, if what you want to say can be expressed in a short video, we recommend to go that route!
